Budgam, Aug 08 (KNO): In a first-of-its-kind achievement in Kashmir, a young farmer from Beerwah, Budgam, has successfully cultivated Nadru (Lotus Stems) on his wetland outside the traditional habitats of Dal Lake, Nigeen Lake and Wular Lake. As per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Tariq Ahmed, a resident of Warihama Beerwah, has grown lotus stems on a patch of wetland in his locality, marking a significant breakthrough in the area's agricultural innovation. “I thought of doing something innovative so that lotus can be grown outside the polluted lakes,” Tariq told reporters. “If people study more about this, it can become a good source of income and create jobs.” According to him, the experiment was carried out without any institutional support. “I brought the saplings from Srinagar on my own. No department supported me in this effort,” he said, urging authorities to assist farmers, who wish to replicate such initiatives. Experts believe the success could pave the way for the large-scale cultivation of Nadru in other wetlands of the Valley, reducing dependency on produce from lakes that are facing pollution and environmental challenges—(KNO)
